I am one of the four authors and instructors of Sport & Sustainability, an online certificate course offered by Barça Innovation Hub, FC Barcelona. The other three are Marisa Schlenker, Geert Hendriks and Clémence Gillier, of The SHIFT. We wrote the course content together and the four of us teach it. Four other experts from The SHIFT contribute: Bikram Lath (Local Organising Committee, FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup India 2022), Catherine Fournier (former CSR Project Manager, FSV Mainz 05), Neil Beecroft (former Sustainability Manager, UEFA EURO 2016) and Anne-Cécile Turner (Sustainability Director, The Ocean Race). The course is in English and Spanish. There is no public recording.
Content
The course explains how a sports organisation, such as a club, a league or an event organiser, sets up a sustainability programme: how it relates the programme to its business strategy, how it runs it, how it measures the impact, and how it communicates the results. It is open to anyone interested in sustainability in the sports industry.
It has two parts of four modules each. The expected workload is about six weeks at six to eight hours per week.
- Sustainable strategy in sport: the foundations of sustainability in sport; developing a programme based on international standards and frameworks; measuring and reporting on impact; sponsorship opportunities through sustainability.
- Managing and financing a sustainability programme: defining the vision and engaging stakeholders; a plan to finance and implement the programme; engaging fans and athletes; communicating about sustainability.
Participants who complete the course receive a certificate from Barça Innovation Hub.
